Hammocks
Just like their music, food, literature and women, hammocks are one of the highlights of Latin American culture.
The Indians of Latin America are the inventors of this comfortable, beautiful, practical and economical piece of furniture
and nowadyas it is widely used in Latin America. In the United States it is since long used in gardens and also in Europe where it is seen ever more.
There are two types of hammocks:
- net hammock - the original type made of knotted ropes in form of a net
- cloth hammock - with a cloth usually of cotton
The net hammock weighs less and is more practical, the cloth hammock is more comfortable and more decorative.
Ecuadorian hammocks
Hammocks are produced in Latin America from Ecuador to Mexico.
In Ecuador the hammock production is concentrated in the Otavalo region, a small town in the Northern Andes highlands of Ecuador.
The Indians from this region have been known for centuries for their weaving skills and until date the region is an important textile manufacturer. At Otavalo's market you are offered ponchos, pullovers, shirts, hats, trousers and hammocks.
Besides skillful weavers the Otavaleños are good musicians and bussinessmen and with their music and their textiles they travel around the world.
Their music and textiles brought wealth to the Otavalo people and they are seen as the most successful Indian people in the Americas,
and an example of how economic integration can be achieved.
Nayá Nayón hammocks
Nayá Nayón hammocks are hammocks from Otavalo Ecuador.
We have been working for years with a number of classified hammock producers who make their hammocks especially for Nayá Nayón.
For printing and labels we work together with proven companies in Quito.
In the Nayá Nayón workshop we produce the hammock bags, pillows and do the quality checks.
Every hammock is checked on weaving faults, stains etc. before it is sent.
With a Nayá Nayón hammock you get a professional work of art from a weaving tradition of more than 500 years.
Tips on using Nayá Nayón hammocks
Nayá Nayón hammocks are ideal for indoor and outdoor.
Suspend
Drill two holes in your wall about 2.5 meters apart and fix large hooks (10 cm) in it and put the cords of the hammock over it.
Or attach the hammock with a strong rope through the cords of the hammock and sling the ropes around two palms or trees.
Before use, make sure that the hammock has been suspended strong enough.
Baby hammocks
If you use the hammock for babies or small children have the hammock suspended low above the ground (20 cm),
preferably a soft surface (no stone or concrete) so if they suddenly get out, they will not fall too hard.
Washing
You can wash the hammock normally.
It is recommended to wash dyed hammocks (series 04.206) before use to remove redundant paint.
The cotton hammocks (all series 04.20) can be washed at high temperatures, though they may shrink a little. Mixed material and acrylic hammocks should be washed at low temperatures (40°C).
When washing the hammocks put them in a bag to prevent the cords from forming a knot.
Material
Series starting with 04.20 are pure cotton
Series starting with 04.22 are cotton with stripes from acrylic thread
Series starting with 04.25 are acrylic
Measures
Length (l) is the length of the cloth.
Width (w) is the width of the cloth.
Total length (tl) is the length of the cloth and cords.
Weight (w) is approximate.
We use the metric system.
